Voices rise in every direction.

Telling us what to want,

how to heal,

who to become.

They are incessant.

Alluring.

Often louder

than the still, small voice of God.

The Details Between

is an invitation to pause.

To attune our hearts, eyes, and ears

in the spaces between

the waiting, the receiving, and the letting go.

He is in the dark soil,

the abundant watering,

and in the harvesting.

This is a space for discernment, not urgency.

For abiding, not striving.

For obeying, not fearing.

For learning to first hear God’s voice,

to see His goodness,

and to trust His faithfulness.

Here, we are not chasing clarity. Or Answers.

We are practicing awareness. Of Him.

Just as Jesus did.

And in the details, in the pause, we learn to notice,

and we find God has been speaking all along.

Winter requires a different kind of listening.
It’s in the waiting, the stillness.
When you get past the wind’s violent nagging,
and stop your boots from crunching underfoot.

It’s in that moment of pause,
in dead silence,
that you can tap into the sound of life.

What do you hear?

A bird’s single chirp.
A creaking branch thawing.
Your breath.

“You are full of life.
You are still alive.”

He whispers it to the birds.
He whispers it to the trees.
He whispers it to me, and to you.

Winter isn’t over yet, and that’s ok.
Just listen.
You are still full of life.

Mornings tell the truth about us.
What we start with is often:
What we trust.
What we fear.

At dawn, the basket I bring is always empty
of yesterday’s
plans, hopes, and dreams.

And so there is often a quiet urgency,
to fill.
Sometimes it’s a loud demand.
To fill up another’s basket.

But we were never meant to provide the solution.
To prove ‘I am worthy’
— of this day.

To receive a gift requires an open hand.
And the gift of the morning,
the empty basket,
is first best received,
not with a ‘how?’
but with a ‘thank you.’

The edge of morning begins
long before the day breaks.
It begins with how we end the night.

How do you lay the day down for rest,
and prepare your soul for awakening?

“The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.” - Matthew 25:4-7

Stillness is not wasted time.
Do you hear that, soul?

After the slowing comes the urge to move.
To do.
To fix.
To check that we are still becoming.

And then, there is always one more.
One more sweep.
One more load.
One more email.
One more wipe.
One more swipe.
One more like.
One more.
One more…

Be still.

Like a blanket of snow,
stillness is the covering over my day.
It is the white, clean slate for my sin.
It is the peace before the pressure.

Holy Spirit,
teach me how to stay.
Meet me in the remaining, Lord.
Go before me
before I emerge too soon.

Winter is not inactivity.
It is preparation.

Preparing for the new
to be received.
Gifted.

In fear, we grasp and hoard,
eyes pried open,
but faith knows when to sleep.
Even Jesus slept through the winds.

And so creation slows its breath
and stills its heart.
Life hibernates to survive.
Seeds wait underground.

It’s roots deepening,
it’s shedding the unnecessary,
it’s letting go
and saying no.

What if this season is not asking you to gather more,
but to trust God
in the quiet, unseen work?

A new year often beckons
for a new you.

What if we are held as His masterpiece?
What if we ourselves are being made new?

We are not the makers of newness.
The Maker of all things
is the One who makes all things new.

But we reach for re:
re:solve.
re:invent.

Often from a quiet restlessness.
From a willpower
that rarely lasts beyond a few weeks.

No new coat or cloak,
no painted veil,
can make us someone new.

One day, He will make all things new.
Until then,
what is He asking of you,
just for today?

Sometimes we don’t get the gift we wanted.

Sometimes the answer is no.
Sometimes it’s not yet.

Waiting can tempt us to take things into our own hands.
To create makeshift substitutes,
to grasp for what’s available.
Just because it’s easier,
just because there’s a discount.

But God’s timing is kind and careful.
And His no is always good.

So before you go with the rush,
and reach for what you’ve wanted;
pause.

What is that gift not yet opened,
and can you trust the Giver?

Waiting can feel like the longest night.
Hands raised to brace ourselves
in a blind wandering.

But this night reminds us
what faith looks like in the dark.

If they followed a light through the darkness,
for the King of Kings,
so do we.

We look for a light strong enough
to lead us not only through the valleys,
but also through the brightest moments.

We are still a people in between,
learning to hope.
With anticipation.
With obedience.
And with a Way.

The waiting will always ultimately
lead us to Him,
if we look for the light.

“The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Waiting is not a measure of worth.
I have been reciting this regularly.
As events accumulate, we can start to believe that if we wait
long enough,
patiently enough,
good things will come because we waited well.

But waiting does not make us deserving.
Nor does suffering in the waiting prove that we failed.

Not hours after the photo was taken,
that photograph of his little hands, soft and open,
I found myself sitting in a waiting room of other little ones.
The image of tiny fists clasped too tight
now burning in my mind.
Minding the minutes, my hands attempting to be still.

And still, God was good.
Not because we waited correctly or had enough faith.
But because goodness is who He is.

There are seasons where waiting feels holy, set apart,
and seasons where it feels unfair and frightening.
Neither determines your worth.

You do not wait to be loved.
You are loved, and, sometimes you wait.

We are so prone to consuming while we wait.
Scrolling. Clutching comforts. Gathering proof that the gift will come.

But sometimes God asks us to wait empty.
Because hands that are already full cannot receive.

Children understand something we often forget.
Open handed, without control.
They wait with wonder, not guarantees.

It is okay to wait with nothing to show.
It is not weakness to wait empty.
It is trust.
It is saying, I believe You are good,
and what You give will be enough.
